2012  Mock Draft

Redskins make mistake in taking QB Kirk Cousins in 2012 Draft

The Redskins have been a star-crossed franchise for twenty years. Under Dan Snyder, very little has gone right.  Even in taking their franchise Quarterback in 2012, the Redskins followed up their top pick with an instant controversy by selecting QB Kirk Cousins in the 4th Round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

The Redskins made a mistake in drafting Kirk Cousins for two reasons:

What RG3 doesn't need right now is more pressure.  The Redskins have already given up 2 first rounders and a 2nd round pick RG3.  The comparison has already started.  Cousins is a highly rated QB that dropped into the 4th round.  The comparisons will continue in mini camp, training camp and the pre-season games.

Which Rookie QB is performing better?

Which Rookie QB is picking up the offense better?

Which Rookie QB has more command in the huddle?

Which Rookie QB is wearing the wristband to call plays?

Like any Rookie QB, RG3 will need time to develop. Some Rookies have entered the league and had fast starts (Cam Newton, Andy Dalton recently come to mind), but most Rookie QBs come into the league and struggle their first season.  Eli Manning struggled his first year compared to Kurt Warner as a top draft pick, but Eli didn't have to worry about comparison to another up and coming rookie.  Before Kirk Cousins, RG3 was going to be compared to Rex Grossman.  RG3 could have developed at his own pace even if Rex was lighting it up since everyone knows what Grossman's ceiling is.

Since year 2000, Redskins have had 13 starting Quarterbacks and all Redskins fans hope RG3 is finally their franchise QB.  However, RG3 will need help.  Kirk Cousins will not make a play for RG3 on the field.  Drafting another Rookie QB doesn't help RG3.  The Redskins sorely need depth on the Offensive Line and more playmakers at Receiver and Running Back.

Ron Jaworski said "Leave him alone, that was my feeling when I saw this Kirk Cousins pick come up, leave RG3 alone, let him develop at his pace, let him be THE MAN in Washington.  Lo and behold here we are discussing competition for him already, and I know the Redskins have to handle this, they'll say there is no competition, RG3 is our guy. Come on, we're not going to buy into that ... the media, the fans are going to say wait a minute you drafted another quarterback to already compete with Rober Griffin? I believe he should be the quarterback, anointed the quarterback, and take this team on his shoulders."

RG3 said "We were in the same group at the combine, so I got to know him a little bit, he's a good guy, look forward to going out and growing with him, and it will be fun .... I'm glad to have him on the team as a Washington Redskin."

RG3 is already handling things with class, but further unnecessary tests in pre-season remain.
